Abstract
Carbon modified n-type titanium oxide (CM-n-TiO2) photoelectrodes were synthesized by thermal oxidation of grooved and non-grooved Ti metal sheet (Alfa Co. 0.25 mm thick) by heating at several temperatures for different lengths of time. The photoresponse of the CM-n-TiO2 was evaluated by measuring the photocurrent density, jp which is proportional to rate of water splitting to hydrogen and oxygen. The optimized non-grooved and grooved CM-n-TiO2 photoelectrodes showed photocurrent densities of 5.1 and 10.0 mA cm-2 at measured potential of -0.7 V/SCE respectively at illumination intensity of 50 mW cm-2 from a 150 Watt Xenon Lamp. Thus, a two fold increase in photoresponse was observed for the CM-n-TiO2 synthesized on grooved Ti metal surface compared to that on the non-grooved ones. These CM-n-TiO2 photoelectrodes were characterized using photocurrent density measurements, UV-Vis spectra, and Energy dispersive analysis by X-ray (EDAX).
