Abstract

The kinetics of the isothermal dehydration of two clay minerals, attapulgite and powdered vermiculite were studied both in vacuo and in the presence of constant water vapour pressure. The mechanism of dehydration was found to be interfacial where diffusion plays a dominant role and it is called “activated diffusion”. A comparison is made with some layered structure clay minerals.
