Abstract
It was shown that equilibrium swelling of rubber increases during elongation and decreases during compression. Strain in swollen polymers creates a gradient of chemical potential of the solvent in the direction of transfer of the material from an equilibrium swollen polymer to the surrounding medium and vice versa.
