Abstract

1. 1. The effect of one month's starvation on activities of enzymes and levels of nutrients in the pyloric caeca of Echinaster sp. was measured. 2. 2. The activities of fructose bisphosphatase and triosephosphate isomerase decreased significantly with starvation. The activities of glycogen phosphorylase and aldolase did not change with starvation. 3. 3. The levels of glycogen decreased significantly with starvation; the levels of total carbohydrate and total lipid did not decrease significantly with starvation. The pyloric caeca index decreased slightly. 4. 4. Decreases in enzyme activities correspond with decreases in respiratory metabolism found in the starvation of echinoderms.
