Abstract

The motivation of this work is to minimize cogging torque and torque ripple in a 6 pole, 27 slot variable flux interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (VF IPMSM) by skewing the permanent magnets (PMs) for few steps. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) shows that step skewed PMs significantly minimize cogging torque and torque ripple in the 6 pole VF IPMSM. But each step of skewed PMs in a pole for a variable flux permanent magnet machine has to be magnetized or demagnetized properly. A proper current pulse is required to demagnetize each step in a PM-pole. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to select the proper current pulse to demagnetize each step of the step skewed PM-pole.
