Abstract

Objective To investigate the efficacy of recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor (r-bFGF) eye drops on tear film after corneal foreign body removal. Methods A case-control study.127 eyes of 127 patients with corneal foreign body were randomly divided into two groups:treatment group (group A,65 eyes with r-bFGF eye drops and Ofloxacin eyes drops after foreign body removal) and control group (group B,62 eyes with Ofloxacin eyes drops only).Tear film break up time (BUT),Schirmer Ⅰ test (SIt) and corneal fluorescein staining (FL) were measured preoperatively and 3 days,5 days after foreign body removal. Results On the third day after foreign body removal the BUT increased and FL reduced. The differences were both statistically significant(BUT:t =3.050,P =0.003 ; FL:t =-6.934 P =0.000,) between two groups. On the fifth day after foreign loody removal the BUT had no statistically significant difference (t =1.407,P =0.162),but the FL still had statistically significant difference (t =-3.367,P =0.001).The SIt reduced greatly after foreign body removal. The differerence were statistically significant between preoperation and on the third day after operation (t =-4.825,P =0.000),and there was no statistically significant difference between preoperation and on the fifth day (t =1.507,P =0.134) after surgery. Conclusion The r-bFGF eye drops has good effect on corneal epithlium healing and recovery of tear film stability after corneal foreign body removal.
