Abstract
The effect of rare earth doping on thermo-physical properties of lanthanum zirconate was investigated. Oxide powders of various compositions La 2Zr 2O 7 were synthesized by coprecipitation-calcination method. High-temperature dilatometer, DSC, and laser thermal diffusivity methods were used to analyze thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), specific heat, and thermal diffusivity. The results showed that CeO 2 doped pyrochlores La 2(Zr 1.8Ce 0.2) 2O 7 and La 1.7(DyNd) 0.15(Zr 0.8Ce 0.2) 2O 7 had higher TEC than La 2Zr 2O 7 and La 1.7Dy 0.3Zr 2O 7. La 2(Zr 1.8Ce 0.2) 2O 7, La 1.7Dy 0.3Zr 2O 7, and La 1.7(DyNd) 0.15(Zr 0.8Ce 0.2) 2O 7 had lower thermal conductivity than undoped La 2Zr 2O 7. The Dy 2O 3, Nd 2O 3, and CeO 2 codoped composition showed the lowest thermal conductivity and the highest TEC. Thermo-physical results also indicated that TEC of rare earth oxide doped La 2Zr 2O 7 ceramic was slightly higher than that of conventional ZrO 2-8wt.% Y 2O 3 (8YSZ), and its thermal conductivity was lower than that of 8YSZ.
