Abstract

In this work the effect of pre-microdeformation — diamond smoothing on the characteristics of the hardened layer of stainless steel AISI 321 after ion-plasma nitriding in a glow discharge was investigated. The study found that at the chosen conditions, the diffusion of nitrogen deep into the samples, without pre-microdeformation before ion-plasma nitriding, is insignificant. It is also found that the pre-microdeformation — diamond smoothing allows for a significant increase in nitrogen diffusion during ion-plasma nitriding, thus contributing to an increase in surface hardness and thickness of the hardened layer of stainless steel AISI 321, which in turn may lead to a significant increase in the resource of finished parts.
