Abstract
The effect of three phenolic compounds, phenol, catechol and pyrogallol, on the hydration of white Portland cement was studied. Phenols increasingly retard hydration as the number of hydroxyl groups increases. Spectroscopic studies revealed that phenols interact chemically with the cement surface or calcium hydroxide, forming impermeable coatings or poisoning the nucleation and growth of Ca(OH)2 crystals
