Abstract

The aim of the present work was to study the effect of the α-Al2O3 and MgAl2O4 oxide films, normally found in cast aluminum alloys, on formation of Fe-rich intermetallic phases. In order to investigate the role of these oxide films, experiments were carried out upon conditions in which formed in situ oxide films by natural oxidation were present. Results in this research agreed well with previous reports suggesting that Fe-rich intermetallic phases nucleate upon the oxide films. This is based on some Fe-rich intermetallic phases that are clearly related to oxide films within the microstructure. The intermetallic phases formed on oxide films were identified with the help of techniques such as SEM/EDS and X-ray diffraction.
