Abstract

XPS, ESR and IR spectroscopy have been used to study changes on the surface of a Rh CeO 2 catalyst induced by thermal treatments under vacuum and subsequent CO adsorption. IR spectra of adsorbed CO confirm the presence of Rh + and the formation of Rh 0 indicated by XPS. ESR spectra show the reduction of some rhodium ions, particularly at the rhodium oxide-cerium oxide boundary, during CO adsorption, favoured by the reaction of CO with the support to form carbonates.
