Abstract

The effect of Ni added in the “solid state reactive sintering” process for Sc- and Y-doped BaZrO3 proton conducting electrolytes is investigated as function of Ni and (Sc, Y) acceptor concentration. Thermogravimetry shows that NiO addition significantly decreases the effective acceptor concentration and thus proton uptake. Samples with substitutional Ni on the Zr site exhibit a distinctly different hydration behavior. Thus the effect of the added Ni is assigned to the withdrawal of Ba from the perovskite lattice with corresponding partial site change of the acceptor dopant, rather than to Ni incorporation into the BaZrO3.
