Abstract

The present work is concerned with studying the effect of some new aliphatic and aromatic diamines as additives in combination with the effect of other parameters such as current density and temperature on the rate of electrodeposition, energy consumption, and morphology of nickel deposited from sulphate solutions. Current efficiency of Ni deposition ranged from 6·13 to 84·00% depending on the operating conditions while energy consumption ranged from 0·25 to 11·58 kWh kg−1 depending on the operating conditions. A scanning electron microscopy study revealed that from among the different amines examined, diphenyl amine gave the highest degree of deposit brightness. The mechanism of action of different amines has been discussed. Possible application of the present results in different electrometallurgical processes involving Ni deposition such as electrowinning, recovery of Ni from waste solutions, electroforming, electrorefining and electroplating was noted.
