Abstract

Abstract ‘Allahabadi Safeda’ guava (Psidium guajava L.) fruits given a postharvest treatment of chlorflurenol methyl ester 74050, a morphactin, ranging from 10 to 1000 ppm, prevented cumulative physiological losses in weight, fungal decay, the growth of Gloeosporium psidii and Pestalotia psidii in vitro, chlorophyll breakdown and loss in firmness. The loss of dry weight, ascorbic acid, non-volatile organic acids and sugars was reduced significantly in the treated fruits. Among sugars, rhamnose was identified only in the treated fruits and only in very small quantities. Higher concentrations of morphactin ranging from 200 to 1000 ppm were injurious to the soft skin. One hundred ppm was observed to be the most effective concentration in maintaining the market value of the fruits by retarding various harmful textural, physiological and biochemical changes.
