Abstract
Many variations to the standard horizontal NEMA frame integral horsepower motors to meet individual applications are found in the petroleum and chemical industry. These modifications many affect motor operating efflciency. The five major motor losses will be reviewed along with examples of the effect of modifications, such as special bearings, shaft seals, and high altitude, on these individual losses and overall motor efficiency.
