Abstract

The effect of an inert second phase on microstructural development and superconducting properties has been studied in order to improve the J/sub c/ value under magnetic field. 100 /spl Aring/ MgO particles were homogeneously mixed with the Bi-2223 phase using planetary ball milling and ultrasonification. The reaction sequence has been traced using X-ray diffraction technique and microstructural development has been studied using SEM and EPMA. Homogeneous distribution MgO grains in Bi-2223 phase led to the increase in J/sub c/ under magnetic field possibly due to the introduction of flux pinning sites.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
