Abstract

1. 1. Calvaria of newborn rats ( Rattus norvegiens) were incubated for 4 hours with [ 14C]glycerol to study the effects of various metabolic inhibitors on bone lipid synthesis. 2. 2. lodoacetate at io- 4M concentration resulted in lowlevels of both radioactive lipids and 14CO 2 production. Experimental results were 15 % and 26 % of control values respectively. 3. 3. Dinitrophenol at 10 −3M and 10 −4M resulted in decreased lipid radioactivity but not to the same extent as that observed with iodoacetate ( 18 %−48 % of control values). 14CO 2 production was also decreased. 4. 4. Sodium cyanide at 10 −4M had little effect upon lipid radioactivity whereas values at a concentration of 10 −3M were 65 % of control values. 14CO 2 production was depressed at both concentrations of sodium cyanide used.
