Abstract

Subcutaneous injection of a high dose of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) on Day 1 and followed by ethinyl estradiol (EE) on Day 3 did not induce complete degeneration of rabbit embryos as in the rat. Injection of MPA one day before ovulation or of EE on Day 1 or 2 induced a very high proportion of embryonic degeneration. Injection of EE alone on Day 3 induced certain proportions of degeneration but on Day 4 or 5 had no effect. It appears that a general guideline for postcoital contraceptive trials learned from the rat cannot be applied to the rabbit.
