Effect of marsupialization on intraoperative blood loss, operative time, and postoperative pain in patients with jaw cyst

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of marsupialization on intraoperative blood loss, operative time, and postoperative pain in patients with jaw cyst. Methods 106 cases of jaw cyst patients admitted to our hospital from March 2017 to March 2019 were selected as the subjects of this study, and were divided into control group and research group according to different treatment regiments, with 53 cases in each group. The control group was treated with traditional jaw cyst curettage, while the study group was treated with marsupialization. The surgical conditions, postoperative treatment, and changes in inflammatory indicators of patients in the two groups were compared, and detailed assessment and analysis were conducted. Results The operative time [(34.5±4.7) min], intraoperative blood loss [(14.1±6.8) ml], postoperative pain rate (3.8%), and postoperative infection rate (1.9%) in the study group were all lower than those in the control group [(62.6±9.2) min, (85.6±14.8) ml, 20.8%, and 11.3%] (P<0.05). The recurrence rate (1.9%) and the incidence of neurological complications (3.8%) in the study group were all lower than those in the control group (13.2% and 17.0%) (P<0.05), and the reduction of cyst volume [(89.6±3.4)%], hyperplastic thickness [(34.0±3.1) mm], and bone mineral density [(0.5±0.1) g/cm2] in the study group were all higher than those in the control group [(31.3±9.6)%, (12.2±5.3) mm, (0.3±0.1) g/cm2] (P<0.05). After treatment, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha, and CRP levels in both groups were decreased (P<0.05), and IL-6 [(183.3±40.5) ng/L], IL-8 [(132.4±19.9) ng/L], TNF-alpha [(292.4±69.9) ng/L], and CRP [(3.9±2.3) mg/L] in the study group were lower than those in the control group [(222.5±36.4) ng/L, (164.4±21.3) ng/L, (380.2±69.0) ng/L, (5.3±1.9) mg/L] (P<0.05). Conclusion Marsupialization for the treatment of jaw cyst not only has a good surgical effect, has a mild inflammatory response, with less intraoperative blood loss, operative time, and postoperative pain, which is worthy of clinical promotion and application.
