Abstract

To improve the volume stability of CAC-bonded high Al2O3-based castables with higher MgO content, magnesium aluminum hydrotalcite (MAT) was added as the MgO-bearing precursor to prepare CAC-bonded high Al2O3-based castables. The influence of MAT level on the properties of castables, i.e., physical, and thermo-mechanical properties, strengths, volumetric stability and slag corrosion resistance, was investigated. Results indicated that the volumetric stability of castables containing MAT was increased, whereas the castable strength was lowered, due to the favored pore formation from MAT decomposition in castable matrices. The increased porosity, however, did not decrease the slag corrosion resistance of CAC-bonded castables.
