Abstract

1. Superhard cermets on a base of chromium and titanium carbides should not be ground since it reduces the strength of the materials by 40–60%. 2. If the machining allowances are appreciable, these materials should be machined by the electro-erosion method using “harsh” conditions which ensure a high productivity, with subsequent removal of the defective surface layer of the material by fine electro-erosion cutting. 3. When the machining allowances are small, articles made from materials on a titanium and chromium carbide base should be fabricated with the use of only mild electro-erosion cutting conditions, which increases their strength by 7–14%.
