Abstract
1. During the heating of compacts from a mixture of titanium and chromium carbide powders titanium carbide formation begins at a temperature of 790°C and ends at 860°C. At still higher temperatures the resulttant titanium carbide dissolves in the titanium. 2. The presence of pores is not necessary for the formation of titanium carbide. The porosity forming in a compact is a result of the inequality of the diffusional fluxes in the titanium-chromium-carbide system. 3. The mechanism by which titianium carbide is formed depends on the carbon potential of the chromium carbide particles.
