Abstract

It is shown that the compatibility of polystyrene and polyisoprene in solution is influenced by the addition of from 2 to 10% of quinone which displaces the separation point of the mixture to the higher concentration ranges. In the absence of heating or irradiation the effect of the quinone is due to specific adsorption of the latter on the polyisoprene molecules which alters the conformation of the chains in such a way as to inhibit their association, with the result that compatibility of the polymers in solution is increased. It was found that under the conditions of the experiments practically no interaction takes place between quinone and polystyrene in solution nor between quinone and butadiene-styrene and polybutadiene rubbers.
