Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effect of one-off root canal therapy using iRoot SP combined with ibuprofen for refractory apical periodontitis and its influences on pain incidence and frequency of closure. Methods 128 patients with refractory apical periodontitis who were admitted to our hospital from April 2016 to April 2017 were enrolled in the study. All the subjects were divided into a control group and an observation group according to the random number table. The control group were treated with iRoot SP single root canal, and the observation group with iRoot SP single root canal and ibuprofen after operation. The number of seals and the treatment effect 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery were compared between the two groups. The pain degree 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 1 week after operation were compared between the two group. Results The treatment effective rate in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group 1 and 3 months after operation (87.4% vs. 74.8% and 92.2% vs. 81.2%; P 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the number of seals between the two groups [(2.2±0.5) vs. (2.0±0.6);P>0.05]. The visual analog scores (VAS) of the observation group at the same time point were significantly lower than those of the control group (all P<0.05); and the VAS scores reached the maximum 24 h after surgery in the two groups. Conclusion iRoot SP single root canal combined with postoperative ibuprofen has a good therapeutic effect on refractory periodontitis, and can effectively relieve postoperative pain, so it is worth for further application in clinic. Key words: Root canal therapy; Refractory apical periodontitis; Ibuprofen; Postoperative pain
