Abstract

The effect of the addition of iron oxide nanoparticles on the efficiency of asphaltenes removal during subcritical pentane deasphalting of the atmospheric residue from heavy oil has been studied. It was found that nanoparticles formed in situ from a precursor solution, despite a slight decrease in the deasphalted oil (DAO) yield, provide a significant decrease in the asphaltene content in DAO as well as increasing metal and Conradson carbon residue removal efficiency compared to particles introduced into the oil residue in the form of a powder.
