Abstract

SummaryThe oxidizing agent, iodoacetate, used to stabilize cysteine in blood and urine had an adverse effect on the absolute amounts of the S-containing amino acids in blood plasma, in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Methionine concentrations were decreased, while taurine, methionine sulfoxides, cystathionine, and cystine increased over those of the nontreated control samples. The use of the qualitative relationship among methionine and its catabolites, however, seemed to be valid for the in vivo investigation of the metabolism of these amino acids.
