Abstract

The friction behavior and wear performance of C/C-CuNi composites under varying humidity conditions were investigated. Lower levels of humidity (30 %–50 % RH) resulted in the formation of a lubrication layer composed mainly of graphite and CuO, which led to adhesive wear of the composites together with stable and low coefficients of friction (∼0.144) as well as a low wear rate. However, when the relative humidity exceeded 70 %, there was an increased tendency for the formation of a brittle layer predominantly consisting of Cu(OH)2 and Cu2(OH)2CO3 compounds due to tribo-chemical reactions between the composites and H2O and CO2 in humid air. Subsequently, this brittle oxide layer caused abrasive wear accompanied by fluctuations in the coefficient of friction along with increased wear rates.
