Abstract
The strangeness-exchange reaction π Y → KN gives a satisfactory explanation to the recent experimental data on subthreshold K − production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions if the final state interaction of K − with the nuclear matter is taken into account. In particular the effect of the Λ(1520) resonance is shown to be very important.
