Abstract

The effect of the mode non-orthogonality on the mean output of a distributed feedback laser is analysed taking saturation effects fully into account. A stochastic approach based on the Fokker—Planck equation is used. Numerical results for a DFB laser with non-vanishing end reflectivity and a complex coupling coefficient are obtained. Particularly, it has been shown that for small coupling strength because of strong field non-uniformity, the light emission is dominated by the excess spontaneous emission and the significant mean output power level can be observed.
