Abstract

The present investigation was conducted at Fruit Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, AAI-DU, Allahabad during August 2002 to December 2002 with the objective of determining the effect of different levels of EMS on seed germination, sensitivity, and seedling growth of papaya. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) comprising of five treatments i.e. Control (2 h soaking) (To), EMS 0.2% (T 1 ), EMS 0.4% (T 2 ), EMS 0.6% (T 3 ) and EMS 0.8% (T 4 ) with five replications. Papaya cv. Farm Selection-1 was taken for this study. Observations on germination percent, germination rate, mutation efficiency and plant growth were recorded. The LD 50 value was 0.10% in which germination was 45%. The results indicated that germination percent was maximum (65%) with Control (2 h soaking) and minimum days required for germination (14 days) was observed in EMS 0.4% (T 2 ). Seeds treated with 0.4% EMS (T 2 ) were observed to have significantly maximum plant height (12.50 cm), stem girth (0.574 cm), petiole length (5.40 cm) and sensitivity as compared to other treatments. Treatment T 2 (0.4% EMS) was found to be the best among all the treatments.
