Abstract
Two types of plastic scintillator contamination monitors were compared by in house and field testing. One monitor uses thick plastic scintillators with a 9mg/cm2 window and is sensitive to both beta and gamma radiations. The second uses a thin plastic scintillator with a 1.3 mg/cm2 window and is sensitive to mainly beta radiation. The effects discussed include degradation of RDA with increased count rate and the variation in individual detector sensitivities and false alarm rates due to the shielding and scattering effects of the person using the monitor. The effectiveness of methods such as shielding the detectors and modifying the software to include corrections for scattering and self-shielding are highlighted.
