Abstract

The combined effect of forces and diffusional fluxes on the critical equilibrium of brittle solids weakened by thermally-insulated sharp-ended hole-type defects was studied. Formulas were derived for critical loads of a solid weakened by a hole with cracks terminating at its edges. It was shown that the strength of such a solid is reduced if diffusion phenomena are taken into account.
