Abstract
The present study represents a comparison between the morphology of the roof of the buccal cavity in two bird species; the common moorhen, Gallinula chloropus and the hoopoe, Upupa epops. The palate region of the common moorhen has a well-developed medial and two lateral ridges and carrying backwardly directed papillae. The palate region of the common moorhen is lined by keratinized stratified epithelium. While, the palate region of the hoopoe, has shallow medial and two lateral ridges which lack the palatine papillae on their surface. The lining epithelium of the palate region of the hoopoe is covered by a thin keratin layer that disappears posteriorly to become non-keratinized epithelium which carried tiny scattered papillae on its surface. Posteriorly, the pharyngeal region in both bird species is lined by non-keratinized epithelium.
