Abstract

In order to obtain good mixing and to scale up internal mixers in rubber processing, heat removal from internal mixers is very important. Also, currently it is very significant to control the temperature of rubber compound in internal mixers when rubber was mixed with silica using silane coupling agent. There are some reports about heat removal and overall heat transfer coefficient of mixing vessel in mixers under 7L, but there is no report about those of factory mixers over 7L. Moreover there is no paper relating to heat transfer to the surfaces of rotors and pressured lid.In this paper, a novel factory kneader of 55L equipped with a rotor having a large shaft in comparison with a conventional factory kneader of 75L was used. Heat removal from the surfaces of vessel wall including both sidewalls, of rotors and of pressured lid for 55L and 75L kneaders was measured. Overall heat transfer coefficient of these surfaces for these factory kneaders was obtained. It was found that the heat removal characteristics of the novel kneader were better and more stable than those of the conventional kneader from start to finish of mixing.
