Abstract

Effect of recent bright LED flashlights and white lines on O&M of persons with severe peripheral field loss in night walk situation has been studied. Luxeon Star(TM) LED Flashlights of 1, 3, and 5 W power were used. Ten normally sighted young subjects (5 males and 5 females, aged 26.3±3.02 years) with low vision simulation goggles participated. PPWS and frequency of collisions to the obstacles were recorded as indices of their O&M performance. Subjects walked most quickly (1.01 PPWS) on white-lined road with 5 W flashlight, in 5° field and 20/100 condition. Without the line, walking speed was significantly slower than the best performance in all conditions.
