Abstract

The addition of small amount of metal oxides can increase the sinterability of Gadolinia-doped Ceria, thus reducing the temperature necessary for its densification. Here, the effect of bismuth oxide as sintering aid is studied by means of dilatometry, porosity and density measurement on samples obtained by uniaxial pressing, with the aim of achieving a microstructure with no interconnected porosity, suitable for realizing a gas tight electrolyte for SOFC. The effect of Bi2O3 load and holding time at high temperature was studied. The most promising doping concentration (6 mol%) is identified and the densification was accomplished more than 400°C below the sintering temperature of GDC10, this allowing the cosintering with copper-based cermet anode.
