Abstract

Al 3+ -ions inhibit photosynthetic 14 CO 2 -fixation of isolated spinach chloroplasts non-competitively (about 60% at 100 μmol Al 3+ /l). The inhibitition is not mediated by a corresponding decrease of enzyme activities of ribulose-1,5-diphosphate carboxylase and ribulose-5-phosphate kinase. The results are discussed in view of electron microscope investigations, which show a clear désintégration of the chloroplast envelope in the presence of Al 3+ -ions.
