Abstract

Summary Pepsin output from Heidenhain pouches was studied during steady states of acid secretion under submaximal histamine stimulation. A small but sustained output of pepsin was observed. Inhibition of acid output and volume rate of flow by acetazolamide and cholecystokinin during continuous histamine stimulation was accompanied by significant increases in pepsin output. These results are similar to those reported for large doses of gastrin. Reduction in the volume rate of flow and acid output induced by lowering the stimulatory dose of histamine was not accompanied by an increase in pepsin output.
