Abstract

Thin films of chromium and vanadium were deposited onto thin film discs of YIG and the resulting changes in the magnetic boundary conditions of the YIG were investigated using spin wave resonance. The deposition of the metal films resulted in the appearance of a surface mode in the spectra at the perpendicular field orientation for both metals. Changes in the boundary conditions with temperature were followed by measuring the relative intensities of the surface mode and the first body mode and by finding the angle of applied field at which only one mode is excited. In the Cr/YIG samples, the intensities of the even-numbered modes go through a minimum at a temperature close to the temperature of a Cr magnetic transition. This effect is due to a change in the spin-spin interaction between surface spins in Cr and YIG. By analogy, the onset of a similar change in the resonance spectra of the V/YIG samples begins at 40 K and saturates near 8.0 K, implying a magnetic transition in the surface of V.
