Abstract
The effect of Mercuhydrin on the ‘free water’ clearance was used to localize its site of action. In diabetes insipidus this diuretic increases the excretion of ‘free water.’ A similar effect attends the administration of mannitol and hypertonic sodium chloride solution. These results suggest that the increment in ‘free water’ clearance following the administration of these agents involves the same basic mechanism, i.e. increased presentation of reabsorbable solutes at the site of ‘free water’ formation.
