Abstract
Objective: The purpose of the study was to conduct a review on the metabolic effects of hormonal contraceptives and weight change in women of childbearing age. Material and methods: A narrative review was carried out taking as reference 47 articles from the PubMed, LILACS, Scielo and academic Google databases. Results: It is reported that the various contraceptive formulations can cause metabolic effects such as increased appetite, plasma lipids, glycemia, insulin resistance and decreased bone mineral density; likewise, abdominal circumference and body weight increase; this increase being dependent on the time of use, the type of progestogen, the estrogen dose, the age and the previous weight status of the patient. Conclusions: In almost all the studies these modifications have been considered non-significant and not clinically relevant; however, it should be taken into account in patients with previous metabolic disorder or risk factors.
