Abstract

Until very recently, people might have been content not knowing about the existence of countries like Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Our awareness of these places has been sudden and shocking. Still, in spite of the recent war in the Middle East and the increased news coverage of that part of the world, perhaps all we know of it is that its very existence is tenuous. The field of educational technology provides an advantage in getting to understand the Middle East because educational technology has been a principal agent in transforming the region. This is true especially in Saudi Arabia where the commitment to educational technology has resulted in its widespread integration into the educational system. This integration has enabled access to education by spanning harsh terrain and transcending complex cultural mores. This discussion will describe how educational technology has transformed one country in the Middle East, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I hope it will provide an insight into that country and into the effectiveness of educational technology as an educational transformer. These views are based on the author's six years of experience as an educator in Saudi Arabia.
