EDUCATION IN CARTOGRAPHY: A REPORT OF THE BRITISH NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR GEOGRAPHY

Abstract

The Cartography Subcommittee of the Royal Society's British National Committee for Geography in its report on education in cartography defines the subject as being limited to the study of information collected by 'surveyors' (using the term in its observational sense) through to the reproduction of maps and charts at any scale and on any subject. Cartography is conceived as an efficient means for the communication of geographical facts and ideas. The sub-committee recognizes a current requirement for professionally qualified 'all-round cartographers' needed to hold positions of authority in the near future. However, a survey of educational institutions offering training courses revealed there appeared to be no complete cartographic education available. The report proposes four principal areas of study for guidance in the preparation of syllabuses at various academic levels: Geography; Measurement; Design; Reproduction. Under these headings a list of subjects pertinent to cartography is presented. It is recommended that training should lead either to a Diploma in Cartography from a College of Technology, or to an M.Sc. in Cartography from an advanced degree course at a university. Le sous-comité de cartographie du Comité National Britannique de la Société Royale pour la géographie, dans son rapport sur l'éducation en cartographie, détermine le sujet comme étant limité à l'étude d'informations, recueillies par des 'ingénieurs-cartographes' (en se servant de l'expression dans le sens observatoire) par moyen de la reproduction de cartes et de diagrammes à n'importe quels échelle et sujet. On s'imagine la cartographie comme un moyen efficace pour la communication de faits et d'idées géographiques. Le souscomité reconnaît qu'il existe une demande courante pour des "cartographes avec connaissances complètes", diplômés dans la profession, pour pouvoir occuper, dans un avenir peu éloigné, des situations administratives. Cependant, une étude des institutions d'éducation qui offrent des cours d'entraînement fait voir qu'une éducation complète en cartographie n'est pas disponible. Le rapport propose quatre zônes principales d'étude d'orientation dans la préparation de sommaires, à différents niveaux académiques: géographie, compassement, dessin, reproduction. On présente, sous ces titres, une liste de sujets ayant rapport à la cartographie. On recommande que l'entraînement devrait mener à un diplôme en cartographie d'un lycée de technologie ou à un M.Sc. en cartographie d'un cours avancé à une université.
