Abstract
Within the context of the development of the market economy, the Government of Poland with assistance from the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) is carrying ouf a tourism development programme. One part of this programme is concerned with management and manpower development. This paper provides details about this work. It sets out the background to the development of tourism education in Poland, it identifies gaps, weaknesses and directions for change in manpower development and it describes the programme of action which is being planned and implemented. Among the conclusions is that while the provision in Poland contains a number of weaknesses compared with Western Europe, there are also many similarities in the problems and issues facing tourism education in Eastern and Western Europe.
