Abstract

This paper discusses the preparation of social workers who are committed to social transformation. Humanist and radical traditions are reviewed regarding their strengths and limitations. From a merging of elements of these traditions four principles-personal power, group support, critical awareness and action-are developed as guidelines for a social work education program which is able to facilitate both personal development and a commitment to social transformation.
