Abstract

Is education for peace a new dimension in education? Certainly yes, in reference to the emphasis on peaceful existence in our daily lives. This educational objective has had lip service originating as far back as the Egyptian civilization when the Athenians aspired for the hope of peace in their adoption of a philosophy of democracy as opposed to that of totalitarianism adopted by Sparta. However, the need and focus for the realization of an education for peace is now a necessity. Most philosophers agree that in the field of education, axiology is the most important philosophic inquiry. Axiology is derived from a Greek word, axious, which means value or worth. Axiology is chiefly concerned with a general theory of value, and asks, What are values? How can their worth be judged? The value and worth of an education for peace is self-evident in light of trends and developments on our college campuses. If there was ever one voice in the history of mankind, it is the one we hear now.
