Abstract

Following a brief overview of the evolution of the role of “educateur” or “social pedagogue” in Europe and the child and youth care worker in North America, the issues of the place of the child in the profession, the consistency and coordination in training and education, and the necessity for scholarship and research are explored from both sides of the Atlantic. It is suggested that international collaboration may generate a synergy that will propel the profession ahead even more quickly.
