Abstract
The International Ergonomics Association (IEA) has produced various documents related to the recognition of ergonomists and the recognition of ergonomics as a discipline and as a profession. All these documents are open to amendment by request from the Federated Societies of the IEA. The IEA documents which will be discussed in this session are: a) core competencies in ergonomics; b) minimum criteria for an ergonomics certification programme; c) IEA procedures for endorsement of a certification process. Other work in progress, on guidelines for the accreditation of educational programmes, may also be discussed in this session. There are a number of other related developments and initiatives taking place around the world, from the well established CREE in Europe and BCPE in North America to those countries just beginning to set certain standards for ergonomics education and practice. The intention of this session will be for a full and frank discussion of the IEA documentation as it stands and also to allow representatives from the different certification and accreditation bodies around the world to exchange views and ideas.
