Abstract

Education is widely seen as a critical input into the creation of an engaged and informed citizenry. This article reviews the available evidence that examines the effects of investments in schooling on measures of civic engagement in adulthood, such as voter participation, volunteering, and support for democratic values. The comparative effectiveness of public and private secondary schools in promoting adult civic engagement is also discussed, along with suggested directions for future research.
