Abstract

On behalf of the Editorial Team of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (JPharmSci®), I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor George Zografi (University of Wisconsin), Dr. Neera Jain (Syros Pharmaceuticals), Professor Kenneth R. Morris (Long Island University), Professor Paul Myrdal (University of Arizona), Professor Rodolfo Pinal (Purdue University), and Professor Peter Wildfong (Duquesne University) for serving as Guest Editors of the Samuel H. Yalkowsky Dedicated Issue of JPharmSci®. These individuals have done an excellent job in helping the Editors and Editor-in-Chief select those manuscripts that contained the most original and most significant scientific findings for inclusion in this dedicated issue. Because of the time and the effort put forth by the Guest Editors, this dedicated issue of JPharmSci® contains a total of 54 articles, including 1 Editorial, 2 General Commentaries, 1 Clinical Trials and Translational Medicine Commentary, 2 Perspectives, 1 Minireview, 2 Reviews, 43 Research Articles, and 2 Notes. These articles will be a lasting tribute to Professor Yalkowsky's contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences and to the science that he loved and fostered throughout his professional career. The responses that the Guest Editors received from their invitations to Professor Yalkowsky's graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists, research collaborators, colleagues, and friends to submit manuscripts for the Samuel H. Yalkowsky Dedicated Issue of JPharmSci® were very positive. In addition, the quality of the papers ultimately submitted and selected for inclusion in this dedicated issue was excellent. This outpouring of interest and enthusiasm are clear demonstrations of the respect and admiration that pharmaceutical scientists have for Professor Yalkowsky's research contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences, his longstanding commitment to training graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists, and his desire and his ability to collaborate with scientists outside the pharmaceutical sciences. In addition to the articles authored by Professor Yalkowsky's graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists, research collaborators, colleagues, and friends, the Guest Editors have authored a General Commentary that summarizes his many impactful contributions in the following areas: (1) prediction and measurement of aqueous and nonaqueous solubility; (2) modification of aqueous solubility by the use of cosolvents, complexing agents, surfactants, prodrugs, lipids, amorphous forms, and cocrystals; (3) enhancement of dissolution and oral bioavailability by physical and chemical modification of solubility; (4) the evaluation of parenteral product characteristics, stability, and performance; (5) computational modeling of biological and physiochemical processes, including intestinal absorption, precipitation, crystal growth, and other phase transitions, including mesophase and polymorphic transitions; and (6) the use of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships and Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships in Drug Discovery and Drug Product Development. Finally, the Samuel H. Yalkowsky Dedicated Issue of JPharmSci® provides overwhelming evidence that Professor Yalkowsky's contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences have been very significant and very impactful; thus, justifying his inclusion among the “TRUE GIANTS” in the pharmaceutical sciences.
